Corporate Philosophies & Business Principles

NorTerra's corporate philosophies and business principles form a framework within which the NorTerra Group of Companies operates and, are reflected by the degree of success achieved in its business activities.

Business Ethics

NorTerra's business ethics are founded on the principle of integrity in all our dealings with stakeholders and the general public.

Communications

NorTerra recognizes the importance of good communications in all its relationships and uses a number of measures and programs designed to foster open and clear communications which yield important benefits in terms of customer and employee satisfaction.

Stakeholders

NorTerra's stakeholders consist of its customers, employees and, through its Board of Directors, its shareholders.

Customers will receive reliable, efficient and cost-effective services and products of the highest quality and will be treated with courtesy and respect with open communication links being maintained at all times.

Employees are to be treated fairly and with respect by superiors, peers and subordinates in a safe environment, free from physical risk and emotional or psychological harm. Employees are encouraged to receive training and will be compensated on an equitable basis, consistent with industry standards.

Shareholders have a right to expect an appropriate return for the investments they have made and to be protected from undue risk for which they are not being compensated. They are also entitled to expect that management and staff will promote the best interests of each of the NorTerra Group companies and their shareholders, be loyal and diligent in the performance of their duties, and in all circumstances, avoid any perceived, real or potential conflicts of interest between their duties as directors, officers and employees and their private interests.

Employment Equity

Employment equity is founded on the principle that no person should be denied employment opportunities or benefits for reasons unrelated to ability.

In addition to the elimination of discriminatory practices based on sex, race or religion, Employment Equity also means taking special measures and accommodating differences to correct the conditions of disadvantage historically experienced by women, aboriginal peoples, persons with disabilities and persons who are a visible minority in Canada.

NorTerra has implemented programs aimed at providing career opportunities and employment and training for its Inuit and Inuvialuit beneficiaries. More information on employment opportunities may be found in the section on Human Resources and Career Development.

Safety

NorTerra is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment. Managers and supervisors are responsible for ensuring that safety considerations are included while planning the work of their respective operations and for promoting compliance with safety rules, policies and procedures.

Environmental Protection

Protecting the environment is a matter of stewardship. The NorTerra Group of Companies is fully committed to protecting the environment, preventing pollution and ensuring that all work is performed in accordance with accepted standards.

Corporate Citizenship

Each year, the NorTerra Group of Companies reinvests a portion of corporate profits into the areas in which they operate, particularly in the northern communities it serves.

Volunteerism and participation in community affairs at all levels of the organization are encouraged. The NorTerra Group of Companies and its employees are active members of numerous professional, business and community organizations and associations.
