Ownership

NorTerra Inc. is a private, investment-focused management and holding company headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta that has been in operation since 1985.  NorTerra is equally owned by two aboriginal development corporations - the Inuvialuit Development Corporation (IDC) on behalf of the Inuvialuit of the Western Arctic and the Nunasi Corporation on behalf of the Inuit of Nunavut.

Inuvialuit Development Corporation

IDC is one hundred percent aboriginal owned and its sole shareholder is the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC).  IDC is an owner, partner in joint ventures and/or an investor in more than 20 companies, many working in complementary industries and realizing complementary visions.  After 32 years of successful investments, IDC continues to secure financial and long-term benefits for Inuvialuit.  IDC manages its investments, from its office in Inuvik, Northwest Territories.

Receiving its mandate from the Inuvialuit Final Agreement, IDC promotes meaningful participation of Inuvialuit in the Western Arctic, circumpolar and national economies by building and protecting a diversified asset base to generate sustainable financial returns.

IDC has been successful in attaining sustainable growth and a return on equity consistent with industry benchmarks.  In achieving our revenues and profit, IDC ensures that throughout its group of companies, the growth actions of today protect the assets of Inuvialuit for future generations.

Nunasi Corporation

Nunasi Corporation is a birthright development company, wholly owned by the Inuit of Nunavut. It is a vehicle by which Inuit can take advantage of the increased economic activity taking place in Nunavut, across the North as well as in other areas of Canada.   As a development corporation, Nunasi aims not only to earn profits for shareholders but also to enter into business ventures that will directly benefit its beneficiaries, the Inuit of Nunavut.

Nunasi has strong representation from each of the three regions in Nunavut: the Qikiqtani, Kivalliq and Kitikmeot.  It is governed by a Board of Directors which in turn is overseen by a Board of Trustees, both of which have representation from each region. 

From offices in Iqaluit and Yellowknife, Nunasi manages several wholly owned subsidiaries and is involved in a large number of strategic partnerships and joint ventures. These enterprises are involved in retail, transportation, manufacturing, insurance, travel, education, multimedia, fuel distribution, digital communications, medical boarding facilities, contracting and real estate.
